Schrodinger's Cat

I was just reading up on Schrodinger's Cat on Wikipedia. Since when it comes to quantum physics, or even physics, I am basically an idiot, this is a challenging discussion for me to follow. The one thing I'm really certain of is that you wouldn't want to be Schrondinger's Cat. I mean why a cat? Wouldn't the idea have worked just as well with a guppy or a light bulb...the light is either on or off or "smeared out in equal parts"...I love a physicist using words like "smeared", but it's a translation.

The thing that fascinates me about quantum physics is the idea that the system becomes one thing (or another) when an observation takes place. The act of observation changes the actions of the particles. (right?, maybe, I'm learning) This is so very much like creating and showing art. Each piece is based on the artist's concepts, ideas, history and emotions. An observer brings to that art a different set of ideas, emotions and history, changing that artwork, sometimes subtly, sometimes drastically. Although this can be frustrating, I find it very alluring...that art is not a one way lecture. It is, in effect, a three way conversation between you, the canvas and the viewer.

Traveling this Week-end.

I'm looking forward to a long, long drive to Connecticut this week-end. Although I can't honestly say that I'm excited about driving for eleven hours, I do find that I do some of my most enjoyable thinking while driving. Below is a work that I completed over the summer having to do with those quiet moments where your mind has the opportunity and the focus to ruminate and invent. I think of her as my patron saint of grace.

Summer Dress

That day, on my back step
I dreamed of a dress of sunshine,
with seams stitched from bird song,
pressed by the summer breeze.

I've been working quite furiously since July. I've been creating work to exhibit with the Ann Arbor Art Center's Gift Shop and for the art festivals at the Ann Arbor Botanical Gardens and the Bruce Museum in Conneticut. Please see my exhibition schedule for details. I plan on updating the site with new work in Mid-October after I've completed the Bruce Museum show.

First Michigan Show of the Season

People often ask me how I start and build a piece of art. I thought it might be interesting to post some works in progress. Most of these pieces were started a few weeks ago. I hope to have them done for the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Art Fair.

Entangled
This work contemplates the interconnected nature of our world...that the more one examines one piece of the world (a equation, a plant, a star)the more clear it becomes that many more pieces are tangled with it.
